Why Women Talk More than Men

Have you ever been in an argument where your man says you talk too much? Or your guy friends seem to think that all girls suffer from verbal diarrhea?

At the risk of sounding stereotypical, we would say the logical reasoning is that women are more in tune with our feelings and thoughts. Women feel the need to get it out of their system and just share. Meanwhile, men are seen as the macho beings who are uncomfortable voicing their opinion unless it's about manly things like football for example.

Now before you jump up in arms. It has been claimed that women speak about 20,000 words a day – that's 13,000 more than the average man.

In an attempt to understand the differences between the two sexes, you know men are from Mars women are from Venus?, scientists have been conducting various studies on gender disparity over the years.

One theory is that girls are better adept at language skills; we beat the boys in this department, getting a head start during childhood development before they do. Young girls often learn language and acquire wider vocabulary faster and earlier than boys but the differences seem to diminish as both sexes grow older.

In the latest study, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, it was suggested that women have higher levels of FOXP2. This is known as the "language protein". Thus, we are more likely to be the more communicative sex.

However, there are still some who would counter "women talk more than men" as merely an urban legend.

Through his study, psychologist Campbell Leaper of the University of California Santa Cruz believed that the type of activity people were engaged in influenced how much they talked.

Men are more talkative than women when it comes to decision-making task. While women are more engaged when talking about themselves or working with children.

This, he said, could have to do with differences in gender socialisation. Typically, women are more comfortable talking about their feelings while men like to be dominant and take charge.

This could explain why it is so hard to get your man to talk about his feelings. Men do "report talk" while women do "rapport talk".

Just like the many things in life that separates men and women, this one will be debatable for a while. Our communication skills are all wired differently, so rather than use this to embarrass each other, celebrate the differences as God had intended us to be.
